Prabhakar, whose name in Sanskrit means “sun,” has brought light to many seniors in Memphis over the last twenty years. He and his wife, Rohini, began volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program of MIFA when they retired. They have covered a weekly route since 1998 sometimes bringing their grandchildren along. Rohini and Prabhakar have befriended many of the seniors on their route, continuing to visit some who have moved and mourning those who have died.

Prabhakar has lived in Memphis since 1961. He heard about MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association) and the story of its formation in 1968 in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when leaders of diverse backgrounds and beliefs stepped boldly across racial, religious and socioeconomic lines to unite their community through service.

Meals on Wheels is one of MIFA’s biggest programs today with up to 100 volunteers helping provide genuine care and interaction in addition to a hot, nutritious meal to 2500 seniors every weekday.
