CHICAGO — R. Kelly will no longer headline an upcoming concert at UIC Pavilion.

R. Kelly was supposed to headline the Love Jam concert on May 5, but Ticketmaster announced Friday he will no longer perform. It comes on the heels of a petition calling on UIC’s chancellor to cancel the performance.

Natalie Bennet, director of the Women’s Leadership and Resource Center at UIC, said she posted a letter on Facebook addressed to the chancellor. The letter says that “to host the concert at UIC is to condone the harm that [Kelly] has done to African-American women and girls, and create a hostile work environment for black women who work, study and live at UIC.”

Ticketmaster didn’t say why R. Kelly wouldn’t be performing.

The singer’s management team told the Chicago Tribune they weren’t aware of any changes to the lineup. The team has been promoting the concert on Twitter.

R. Kelly has been dogged by allegations of sexual misconduct with young women. The hashtag #MuteRKelly was started across the country to get people to boycott his concerts.

Bennet says she doesn’t think the UIC concert organizers thought much about who they were booking but hopes they will in the future.

“It’s a victory for survivors who are often not heard, not believed, and who, I think for girls especially, who have been the target of misconduct,” she said. “I think it’s a real opportunity to lift them up and say that they’re worthy.”

The May 5 concert also includes Xscape, K Michelle and Lyfe Jennings. The concert itself has not been cancelled.
