On Saturday evening, December 3 at 7pm Milton Community Concerts will be presenting “Let’s Celebrate”, a unique and entertaining program which will provide a sneak-preview of four newly-composed musical dramas highlighting living holiday traditions from various cultures in America. “Let’s Celebrate” is a production of White Snake Projects, and will receive its fully- staged world-premiere performance the following week in Boston. This Milton performance, taking place at First Parish of Milton (535 Canton Avenue) will be a rare chance for local audiences to experience a “room run” of the piece with piano before it moves into the theater for its tech and orchestra rehearsals.

 

Admission is “Pay as you can” (suggested donation $20) and the net proceeds will go to support the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center.

The first piece is called “A Braided Light”, composed by Paul Richards with a libretto by Wendy Steiner. It tells the story of a woman diagnosed with Alzheimer’s as she contemplates her last celebration of Havdalah, a Jewish ritual marking the end of Shabbat. Next will be “Firecrackers” by composer Guang Yang and librettist Paula Cizmar, taking place during the Spring Festival as a new lunar year is celebrated in China and around the world. “Samiir’s Feast”, by composer Jorge Sosa and librettist Cerise Jacobs, tells the story of Samiir, who came to America after escaping death in Somalia, and is now celebrating his first Christmas in America. He remembers his favorite holiday, Eid al Adha, which he celebrated with his mother. The last piece is called “Rosa”, composed by Marina Lopez with librettist Paloma Sierra. Rosa is an adopted child, separated from her family at the Mexican border, who learns her origin story after making an offering on the Day of the Dead.
