WHAT EXACTLY IS SIMULATION TRAINING AND WHY IS IT SO IMPACTFUL?

Simulation is an experiential learning process for adult learners through active participation and subsequent review and reflection. From basic medical problems to critical life-threatening situations, the multi-disciplinary Herb Family Simulation Center provides learners with procedural skills, scenario-based training, opportunities for improved teamwork, communication and inter and intra professional training – driving clinical excellence and patient safety.

Dr. Harrington says medical simulation training is comparable to flight simulation training used in the airline industry – where real-life issues and scenarios can be practiced in a controlled environment before a pilot ever gets the plane off the ground. Simulation training results in 90% retention of learning material. That compares to 10%-40% retention with traditional classroom lectures and clinical observation.

NCH HEALTHCARE SYSTEM’S SIMULATION PROGRAM AWARDED A $1 MILLION CHALLENGE GRANT FROM THE SCHULZE FAMILY FOUNDATION

The NCH Judith and Marvin Herb Family Simulation Center has been awarded a grant opportunity of $1 million by the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. To receive this grant, NCH must raise $1 million towards the Herb Family Simulation Center before May 1, 2023. Gifts of any size contributed within the allotted time period to the simulation program will count toward the Schulze Family Foundation challenge grant.

It is grateful patients and community members like you who provide the resources necessary to help us achieve this type of excellence that you deserve. Will you join us and contribute toward the Schulze Family Foundation challenge today? The impact of your generosity will shape the future of healthcare and build a healthier community.

If you have any question or would like to discuss additional methods of giving, please contact the Center for Philanthropy at 239-624-2000. Click here to read the full press release: https://bit.ly/3Ayz6Ic

CASE STUDY: SIM CENTER TRAINING IMPROVES HEART ATTACKPROTOCOLS, TREATING PATIENTS IN HALF THE TIME

Advancing Professional Medical Education Through Simulation Training

If you’re wondering the extent to which simulation medicine can improve patient outcomes, here’s an extraordinary real-life case study. Earlier this year, a multidisciplinary team at NCH, along with Collier EMS professionals, came together over three months to improve response and treatment to a serious heart attack, or STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction). The treatment involves a cardiologist using a catheter to insert a balloon that opens the blocked artery causing the heart attack. The result of the training exercises with our Sim Center: our “door-to-balloon” time, the standard for measuring performance, was reduced from 74 to 28 minutes. Thanks to the capabilities of the Judith and Marvin Herb Family Simulation Center, NCH now performs at the 99th percentile in this lifesaving procedure. Here are several ways to learn more about the Sim Center:

With a simulation center, teams are able to collaborate to practice safe, high-quality care. Supervised instructions can be provided in situations so medical professionals can master their skills without putting patients at risk. Currently, NCH has one shared learning lab at the Baker Hospital Downtown, with a make-shift control room and shared debriefing room. There is a strong need to:

  • Address the shortage of nurses
  • Provide training to internal medicine and other residents
  • Make it easier for current physicians to continue professional development and skills training
  • Create scenarios tailored to each person’s education and training level

Simulation Investment Opportunities

  • Build a 10,000 square foot center
  • Purchase high-fidelity mannequins for various real-life scenarios
  • Video recording cameras to document training exercises and for evaluation
  • Create clinical rooms, including operating, surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics and trauma
  • Build a conference room and technology for debriefing to provide a reflective period where post-action analysis is carried out in a safe and supportive environment

Training/Skill Development

  • New medical procedures/techniques
  • Critical thinking
  • Customer service/patient experience

How You Can Help: Charitable gifts are being sought to ensure the long-term viability of NCH’s education and training programs.
