Photos from our Watershed Team’s visit last month with the McLeod Lake Indian Band at the proposed McIntyre restoration site near Mackenzie, BC! During the visit, the team built on previous assessments from 2023. They evaluated road conditions, including a large gully on one of the roads, examined the slope along the wetland, and identified approximately 10 headcuts of varying sizes—steep drops in the stream bed that can rapidly increase erosion and destabilize the channel. Measurements were taken of peat depth, stream flow, water depth, and channel width. The team also identified the stream origin and observed wildlife and bird populations. These assessments are crucial for the planning of the restoration project scheduled for the fall of 2024. During the visit, our newest addition to the Northern Pod, Nadia, celebrated her first field trip with an inaugural soaker (boot full of water)—a true rite of passage for anyone engaged in wetland and stream restoration work.

The B.C. Wildlife Federation's Fraser River Tidal Marsh Cleanup crew has been tirelessly working to clear debris from the shores of the estuary! 💪🚯💧 As we've previously reported, common debris found in the estuary include styrofoam, treated wood, hard plastics, household items, and tires. More recently, our team has also discovered several children's toys, including multiple yellow rubber ducks, which they have affectionately nicknamed 'Trash Ducks.' Swipe to see our impressive stats and get a tip of the week from our team's new mascot, 'Trash Duck'! Thanks to Field Technician, Josh for the illustration! PS. If you hadn't heard, in early April, our team exceeded our two-year project target by collecting over 15,000 kg of debris! We are excited to continue announcing their successes as the project continues. Go team! #cleanupcrew #fraserriver #fraserriverestuary #trashduck #bcwf #environmentalheroes

Region 1 President Doug Bancroft supported public education and conservation at the Victoria Outdoor Show over the weekend on behalf of Region 1, and his member club, the Victoria Fish & Game Protective Association. Attendees were able to practice archery, hear current wildlife issues, and learn the impact the BCWF and our valued affiliate clubs have on conservation initiatives around the province. Thank you to Region 1 and the Victoria Fish & Game Protective Association!
